Trail Building & Clearing on Private Land

A good trail isn't just a cleared path — it's graded so it sheds water, holds up to traffic, and stays usable for years. We build and clear private trails for riding, hiking, and access on wooded ridge lots and back acreage.

Trails That Last, Not Just Cleared Paths

The difference between a trail you enjoy and one you keep repairing comes down to how the water moves. A flat, ungraded path across clay-heavy ground turns to a mud channel after the first spring thaw. We crown and grade each trail so rain sheets off the surface instead of pooling on it, and we cut the route to follow the land's natural contours.

On a hillside, that usually means building switchbacks rather than running straight up and down. A straight slope lets water gain speed and wash the trail out each spring; a gentle, angled grade spreads the climb out and keeps it passable. Whether you're walking, riding, or driving down it, the trail stays firmer and safer.

What We Build and Where

  • Hiking and walking trails through wooded acreage
  • ATV and UTV trails graded for vehicle traffic
  • Horse trails wide enough and dry enough for year-round riding
  • Hunting and access lanes cut through brush and timber

Many of the ridge lots and hollows we work in have shale and sandstone just under the surface, and narrow access that means bringing the machine in carefully.

Crossings and Wet Spots

Sooner or later most trails cross a wet draw, a seasonal stream, or a low spot that never dries. We handle culvert crossings that let water keep moving under the trail, and we prep the approaches for small bridges and boardwalks where a crossing is called for. The goal is a dry, stable surface you can count on no matter how much spring runoff the ridge sends down.

Common Trail Building Questions

Can you put a trail through wooded, sloping ground?

Yes — that's most of what we do. We work with the slope instead of fighting it, using switchbacks and gentle grades to keep the trail stable and easy to travel. Rock just under the surface can add work, but it rarely stops a project.

How wide can you make a trail?

That's up to you and how you'll use it. A walking trail can be a couple feet wide; an ATV or horse trail needs more room to turn and pass. We'll shape the width to match what's using it, while keeping the crossing angle safe.

Do you handle creek and wet-area crossings?

Yes. We set culverts under the trail so water keeps flowing, and we grade and prep the approaches for small bridges and boardwalks where you want a walking surface over wet ground.

What affects the length of the job?

The amount of clearing, the steepness of the ground, and how much rock we encounter all matter. A short trail through open woods is quick; a long switchback cut through rock takes longer to grade the way it should be.
