Driveway Installation, Grading & Repair

A driveway is the first thing you use every day and the last thing you want washing out. We install, grade, and repair drives that shed water and hold up to freeze-thaw heaving and spring runoff.

Building a driveway that lasts starts underground

Most driveway failures aren't the surface — they're the sub-base underneath. We strip the soft topsoil, install the right base material, and compact it in lifts before any gravel goes down. Get the sub-base wrong and a drive ruts, potholes, and washes out within a season. Get it right and it rides smooth for years.

Around here the ground doesn't make that easy. Clay-heavy soil holds water, and freeze-thaw cycles heave whatever sits on top. That's why we spend as much time on grading and drainage as we do on the finished surface. Water is what kills a driveway, and we build so it has somewhere to go.

New gravel driveways and re-grading

A new gravel driveway starts with the route. We grade the lane so it crowns in the middle and slopes to the sides, then lay and compact stone so it binds into a firm running surface. For a long rural lane or one to the back acreage, we'll set the grade to carry runoff away instead of letting it pool and soften the base.

If your existing drive has ruts, potholes, or a washboard feel, we re-grade and restore the crown, often tearing out the soft spots and rebuilding them rather than just topping them off. A quick layer of fresh stone hides the problem; a proper repair fixes it.

Culverts, repairs, and drainage

  • New driveway installation with a properly prepared sub-base.
  • Re-grading and crowning to shed water off the drive.
  • Culvert installation so ditches and roadside water cross underneath your entry.
  • Spot repair of ruts, potholes, and washed-out sections.

A culvert is often the difference between a drive that floods every spring and one that stays dry. We'll size a pipe for your drainage, set it with proper slope, and backfill so the crossing stays solid under repeated traffic.

Common questions about driveways

How long will a new gravel driveway last?

With a proper sub-base and regular light maintenance, years. The biggest threat is water, so the drainage and grading we put in at the start are what keep it intact.

Why does my driveway wash out every spring?

Usually the sub-base is soft or the grade isn't shedding water. During spring runoff the water saturates the base and the surface gives way. Fixing the slope and drainage, not just adding stone, is what stops it.

Do I need a culvert at my driveway?

If a roadside ditch or a low spot crosses your entry, there's a good chance you do. We'll look at how water moves across your frontage and tell you if a culvert is needed and what size fits.

Can you repair just part of my driveway?

Yes. Not every drive needs a full rebuild. We'll assess which sections are failing, dig out the soft spots, and rebuild them so the repair lasts.
