Excavation & Land Clearing in Athens, Ohio

Athens County is hilly and heavily wooded, with ridgetop homesites, steep slopes and long switchback lanes. Ridgeline Excavation clears the timber, cuts the pad and builds the access for new builds and hobby farms across the county.

Ridgetop and hillside homesites, cut to build on

Around Athens, the good homesites are up on the ridges, and getting a level pad out of a hillside is a real job. We clear the timber and brush, cut the slope back, and grade a pad that drains and stays put through the freeze-thaw winters that heave driveways and shift ground. Sandstone and clay both show up on these slopes, and each one changes how we dig.

Clearing timber on steep, wooded slopes

Clearing a wooded hillside isn't the same as clearing a flat field. Slopes shed water quick, and once the trees are down the loose ground wants to wash. We take the trees, pull the stumps and grub the roots, then leave the slope graded and stable instead of raw and eroding.

Switchback lanes and long driveways into the woods

Getting to those ridgetop sites means a driveway that climbs and turns, often for hundreds of feet. We build gravel lanes with a firm base and proper drainage, and we cut the turns wide enough for equipment to get in while the build is still happening.

Where we work

We serve Athens and the surrounding towns of The Plains, Nelsonville, Albany and Coolville, along with the wider Mid-Ohio Valley. Every town and county we cover is on the service areas page, and the FAQ answers the rest. We also work nearby in Belpre and Caldwell.

Excavation questions Athens landowners ask us

Our hillside keeps washing after it rains — can you fix the drainage?

Steep ground sheds water fast, and without a path for it, the water takes the topsoil with it. We grade for fall, cut swales and set drains so runoff moves off the slope in a controlled way. That's the difference between a stable hillside and one that washes out every spring.

How do you get your equipment up a narrow, winding lane to a ridgetop lot?

We drive the machines up the lane, and if a turn is too tight we'll widen it as part of the job. Switchback access is standard for ridgetop builds here, and we plan the route before we commit to a pad.

Our site is full of sandstone — what does that do to the dig?

Sandstone is hard going, so a rocky site means more machine time than one that's all soil. But once it's broken and graded, rock makes a firm, solid base for a foundation or driveway. We'll tell you what we run into as we open the ground.

Can you prep a ridgetop homesite from raw timber?

That's the core of what we do around Athens. We clear the trees, pull the stumps, cut a level pad that drains, and build the driveway access — everything a ridgetop build needs before a foundation is ever poured.
